How does spray tanning work?

No matter the time of year, everyone is wants to keep that summer glow. Fortunately, spray tanning allows you to achieve the tanned look. How does tanning spray work? I’ve got your answer!

The process works with Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is a chemical derived from sugar. These chemicals are actually colorless but they interact with the amino acids that occur naturally in skin cells. The skin cells can become several shades darker when they come in contact. While it might sound crazy to think of spraying yourself with a chemical that causes your skin cells to turn brown, DHA is absolutely safe. It has no known health risks, and has been used for decades for cosmetic purposes. DHA ‘s results tend to last no longer than a week. If you want to maintain your beautiful bronze glow, you’ll need to pencil in your spray tanning appointment.

For a tan to look perfect, remember these tips before and after every spray tan:

Spray Tanning Prep

• DO’s
• Take a shower before you get your spray tan
• Rub off skin or exfoliate with a towel, not a loofa
• Shave. 
• Does wax at least 2 days prior

• DON’Ts
• After your shower, don’t apply any unnecessary moisturizers or products to your skin because that can strip the topical bronzer and also make your tan uneven and prevent absorption.
• Lotions, makeup, and perfume can create a barrier between the skin and the tanning solution. It’s best to arrive at your tanning session freshly scrubbed and exfoliated.

During Spray Tanning 

• You should forget about tight fitting clothes, and it’s a good idea to wear dark colors.
• You should also be careful about the underwear that you choose to wear. Some people wear their bras while they’re  tanning, while others prefer to be completely naked.
• However, if you take off your bra, it’s not always a good idea to put it back on immediately after tanning, as it can affect your results.

Spray Tanning Post Care

• The first hours while your spray tan is developing are critical after your appointment. The main aspect of immediate care is avoidance of all water and humidity.
• Rinse in warm water until you have given your tan enough time. 
• Don’t scrub or use water with high temperatures.
